As you can see from the evident texture, this paper has a good amount of tooth.

What is paper tooth in art?

A slight roughness or coarseness in the surface of the painting ground that assists in the application and bonding of subsequent coats of paint.

How to choose paper with the right tooth

There are two major factors you should consider when choosing a surface: your medium, and your method.

  • Colored pencil paper requires tooth so that the pencil will grip the paper evenly.
  • The best paper for graphite depends on how heavy your hand and how much youd like to apply, but you should know that it wont stick very well to slick surfaces.
  • Pastel paper should have a lot of tooth, especially if you intend to apply many layers.
