Pantone Announces Color of the Year

Every year Pantone tells the world what color to bet on … and the world definitely takes heed. As we step up to a stark white canvas of a new year, painterly speaking, best be ready to dip your brush into the deep, dark and oh-so-lovely depths of high-octane purple. Also known as Ultra Violet.

Not Just Any Purple

Ultra Violet is mega purple. It’s orphic (learned that word two weeks ago and it totally plays) as well as cosmic. It’s more than your average squeezed grape though this color is incredibly juicy. A hue so lux it is practically plush. Definitely worth further investigation.

Pantone Says

“A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.

“Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.”

Uh, so basically, artists, Ultra Violet is your color.

Art History Says

If you need more reasons for the Ultra Violet boost, just look to art history. It turns out this purple is old school, been here for a while and still looking fresh. From Monet to Boldini, Georgia O’Keefe to Andy Warhol, Ultra Violet’s resume is a who’s who of artistic greats.

You find it in landscapes (can you say nocturne?), in still life objects of violet loveliness and draped on the figure. Warhol and neon artists like Dan Alva brought it into the 20th century, and it looks like this year will be pushing it into the beyond.
